how many CSS files Askbot has that can be modified for the customization needs

Hi, the main file is askbot/skins/default/media/style/style.css, also it is possible to enter custom css in the "live settings" - the link to settings is available at the upper-right to the site administrators.

Also it is possible to create an additional css file askbot/skins/default/media/style/extra.css where you can put all your customizations. IMO the best option is to edit style.css and keep it in the git revision control. Second best - extra.css.
