So far the only spam protection is Recaptcha support for the creation of password protected accounts, it can be enabled in the "live settings" (turned on and and public and secret keys entered).

Since last week a barrier of 15 rep was added before new questions are emailed through instant updates. This is a temporary measure to protect users receiving email updates from accidental garbage posts by brand new users.

Thats all at this point, more can definitely be done - e.g. akismet support and pre-publishing moderation.
