Is it possible to export data from Askbot in a format recognized by OSQA (I guess that would be the StackExchange format)?

This feature seems important to me because if I migrate to Askbot and something happens (I don't like it, the project dies, etc.) I don't want to be locked in.

Not at the moment, but why not indeed do it, sounds good. I was planning to write importer from OSQA :) very soon - export into SE would be a good solution, as with that you will also be able to go to some other forums that read SE dumps, like Shapado, written in Rails.

The project won't die unless something happens with me. We have a decent amount of funding for 6 months and I will be working full time on askbot for at least a year. So far I was writing askbot code mostly without compensation. However, there were several sponsors who paid for specific features - many thanks to them!

Now I am quitting my job and moving half the world away to work an askbot full time. I will write more detail in about a week when all of this is 100% official (a small formality is left to clear).

Congratulations on your funding! I imagine it must be difficult to get people to fund an open source project. I am curious what your vision for Askbot is. I guess it must involve going commercial in some way, as you are going full time on this. Tomasz P. Szynalski ( 2011-06-18 17:44:13 -0500 )edit
Thanks! Sorry, have to go for the rest of the day. I'll explain it all next week, one thing for sure - the open source project will not be less active or limited (excluding the multihosting optimizations and automation of deployment) because of the commercial plans. The funding is from startupchile.org, thanks to the Chilean government! Evgeny ( 2011-06-18 18:12:48 -0500 )edit
Awesome. Chile is a beautiful country, don't spend all your time coding :) BTW, you aren't looking for contract developers, are you? Tomasz P. Szynalski ( 2011-06-18 18:34:46 -0500 )edit
I picked Askbot for many reasons (quick bug fixes, resusable django app etc) but it does have a smaller community. Only one developer essentially and not many deployments. The ability to export the data so that one could move over to Shapado or OSQA in the worst case scenario is certainly helpful in choosing Askbot since it averts the risk to a large extend. mether ( 2011-06-27 06:17:48 -0500 )edit
