When sharing links via Twitter (or others), a url shortener is used. Is this configurable? End users tend to have specific preferences for various reasons. Should be configurable for a site wide default and a end user specific setting.

You can reuse code from

<https://code.google.com/p/shortenurl/>

I would like support for ur1.ca in particular

Twitter uses its own url shortener, askbot is not doing anything for that. I don't know what twitter will do if you give it a url that is already shortened.

It may be difficult to control how sharing services handle urls that you give them as each has it's own way of doing it.

Twitter will use the shortened url if you give it one. mether ( 2011-07-31 13:10:00 -0500 )edit
I am curious - why would someone prefer one url shortening service to another? Do they give any additional value besides giving short urls? Evgeny ( 2011-07-31 13:48:12 -0500 )edit
well, different advantages. I could use my custom url services with a open source url shortening software like the one from ur1.ca to promote brand awareness like pep.si. bit.ly offers very detailed statistics on how the url is being accessed as well as QR codes. others like tinyurl.com allows you to specify the short url as well which is convenient. mether ( 2011-07-31 13:53:57 -0500 )edit
