How is the state of askbot now compared to OSQA? Looks like osqa except looks is more modular then askbot.

The main advantages of askbot are:

  • presence of a large number of maintained test cases - which gives stronger guarantee of code stability
  • askbot will work in the context of larger site as it is a django application
  • there are startup tests which guide you how to deal with upgrades of software
  • faster page loads (to see that you need to compare the two side-by-side on the same machine)

Features are give or take.

We are developing new features constantly, I'll finish putting dates on the changelog and post a link here soon.

The main reason, I'd say is OSQA is less active than askbot as they are more focused towards QATA (commercial version). I personally started with OSQA but realized quickly that where they are heading too, and I'd decided quickly to move out of that platform.

This is my personal opinion, neither I'm associated with anyof project's development.

Add 1. Main reason is askbot development is open ended and OSQA is close ended, OSQA has no active code branch such as git or similar to support community development, they are got closed code branch and willingly not offering community to contribute into main branch. However both are open source project, but open end project would have more benefits compare to close end in long run.

I would like to argue with your assumption that OSQA isn't development, I have had a comment change with the OSQA's community supporter (http://meta.osqa.net/questions/10655/is-osqa-still-under-development), and as he write there they have some developers that are dedicated just for OSQA. But I feel like you, that their development path isn't clear enough.

@hanan, I'm closely following both site since last few days for my new Q&A community, askbot is more active in terms of development. And I didn't said that OSQA is not under development, I said it is close ended system, thus contribution is only from DZone team members not from programming community.

@Hanan, and one more thing, OSQA, I asked few questions on their meta site regarding the features and etc. The company guy got a macro answer, "Our new platform QATA has all enterprise feature, come and discuss with us"!!!

They are more over trying to use OSQA community to buy commercial agenda than a real open source projects so personally I opt-out that feature and not just me may be few more guys too... ;)

OSQA seems QATO focused, I certainly believe there is truth in Dzone using OSQA as a lead generation / entry point for prospective Q&A site admins.
