I've noticed that quite a few people do not recheck/re-comment on their questions even after receiving answers. One possibility is that they haven't realized that the question has received a comment/answer. IMO, when you ask a question, you should automatically be subscribed to it. If you don't want it, you can remove it, but by default, one should be subscribed to questions they've asked.
Yes, I think this is the best approach at least for questions which you can think of as Facebook status updates where you are strictly subscribed to your own updates and are opted-in (with an unfollow post) on posts you comment on.
