Hey, could you help out? We have a few translations in progress (two are nearly finished), but we'd really like to make this forum available in as many languages as possible.

You can translate right here - without downloading any files - just let us know that you would like to help!

If your language is not on the list above - not a problem - just let us know - either use feedback form below - or send an email at admin@askbot.org!

Interested?

Note: fresh translations are re-compiled every 10 minutes. If you do not see your updates - please send your feedback - there is either some typo in the variable name or something is not right on the server.

Translation progress (updated every few hours)

What's your language?

@Evgeny, I'm very busy at the moment so finalization of the german translation will probably take until the middle or end of this week. Just to let you know. Pekka (May 09 '10)
Hi @Pekka, great, thanks for your efforts! Your translation looks really good, I still remember some German from school. Evgeny (May 14 '10)

I've noticed some minor grammatical errors in the English version that I'd be willing to volunteer to fix.

I might also be able to do a little bit of Spanish translation, but my skills are still beginner, so I might not be a great resource there... yet (:

Thanks, those are in the source files. English is the "key language" with the phrases directly embedded in the source code. What you could do - tell us which ones could be fixed and we'll do it. You could also fork askbot on the github and just edit the source code.

Evgeny (Mar 18)

Thanks! I'll go the fork route; no sense invoking unnecessary overhead. What's the URL for the project?

todofixthis (Mar 19)

Thanks for the link. I think I understand how this works. So I find the English string in one of the source files and make the necessary edits, then I run django-admin.py makemessages -a; is that correct? Do I need to also run django-admin.py compilemessages if I am only changing the English strings? Also, if I want to try my hand at Spanish, I simply edit /locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/django.po, right?

No, the command is customized for the jinja2 templates, described here http://askbot.org/en/question/2480/how-to-translate-django-applications, however it's best to make translations via transifex - https://www.transifex.net/projects/p/askbot/ Spanish is nearly finished, I think only bug fixes might be left for the translation of urls.

@Evgeny, for now base files for translation on Transifex.net seems to be quite outdate. For now on every few checkouts I need to merge these files manually.

Is there a simple way to manage missed or edited strings and create diffs with working system? Or can we get updated version of base lang files?

We'll need to get better on this. Basically the strings need to be regularly synced with the repository, ideally with every release or a commit.

I would gladly translate the engine into Finnish. Where should I start?

EDIT: Hannu Sehm has done it already :-).
