It would be great for sites with more than one main topic.
Like: Physics-, Chemistry-, Math- Category on a scientific site
so the user can subscribe to a special category and the tags within category.
Not precisely that way, but now it is possible to organize certain tags into a 3-level tree by selecting "category tree" as the source of tags in the "data entry rules" section of the settings.
So do I edit the category tree? There is a setting at ``/settings/FLATPAGES/``. Am I supposed to enter a JSON string into this manually? (the help text says "Do not edit this field manually!!!")
The field should not be touched manually, edit the tree directly on the "ask" or "edit question" pages from your admin account.

I can manage only 1 level. Anything I add goes into the first box itself. Has anyone been able to achieve 2 or 3 level tree

We will build the category feature. I think it will be using special tags, I don't want to add field category as an extra independent piece of data to enter, because it will make the user experience worse.
What you mean by "special tags"? When the category field will build?
Basically I don't want to have an extra field for a category on the questions, because it adds one more piece of data to enter. We can have a tag connected to categories (potentially with several levels of categories - maybe 1-3 levels). The category tags must be more or less leaves of the category tree, otherwise there is a potential for confusion. Some tags may end up two completely unrelated fields and you may see irrelevant entries in the q-list when filtering by categories. When we do it depends on funding. Our current priorities - moderation and customization features and solving bugs.
