One of the reasons I was able to attract so many users on my OSQA site was that email notifications were on by default.

Each time someone commented or answered something you participated on, you got an email by default, unless you shut it off.

How do I get this behavior from askbot? It's crucial.

I agree, we change the defaults I think. You can do it now - go to settings and make all email alerts instant.

Also - at signup we ask "receive email or not?" maybe that question could be configured as hidden with an automatic "yes" answer. This would be up to the site owner to decide.
