Is there a way (either in the main UI or in the settings interface) to view user accounts sorted in descending order by registration date (i.e., most recently registered first)?
I need to keep on top of new user registrations so that I can quickly identify and block spam accounts.

Of course on your "people" page, select sort by -> "recent".
If you are receiving email alerts, anonymous posts are not shown as such yet (and will never be shown as anonymous to the admins). So you can see who made the post. Some antispam measures are coming very soon.
