how do I disable showing country flags?

Is there a way to disable the country flags that are shown for each user? I don't see a setting in the admin interface.

At the moment - probably by commenting out corresponding lines of code in the custom theme.

I would not mind removing display of flags from the core application actually.

I'm not with removing this feature from the core app, it's better to have a simple way to disable it for those who don't need/want this feature.
