For me Python works better than PHP, because I find the language cleaner, better organized and easier to maintain the code with.
Other than that, a lot of good software has been written in PHP, but it is mostly web applications. Not so much general purpose software has been written in PHP as in Python.
There are many discussions of this on the web, there is no point really to talk about it here.
