2015-10-05 10:58:39 -0500 marked best answer Unable to download backup files for hosted site

I went to download backup files for my hosted site just now, and I notice that I am unable to do so.

The link to the most recent backup file goes to the following URL:

http://expats.qa/backups/download/?name=expats_askbot_com-1359418214.tar.gz&time=1359426764

Note the value of the name parameter, which references the old domain name for the site (expats.askbot.com).

When I go to the above URL, I get a 404 error.

I tried changing the name parameter to match the new domain like so:

http://expats.qa/backups/download/?name=expats_qa-1359418214.tar.gz&time=1359426764

But when I do this, I get a 502 Bad Gateway error every time.

2015-10-05 10:58:38 -0500 marked best answer Sorting users by most recently registered

Is there a way (either in the main UI or in the settings interface) to view user accounts sorted in descending order by registration date (i.e., most recently registered first)?

I need to keep on top of new user registrations so that I can quickly identify and block spam accounts.

2015-10-05 10:58:38 -0500 marked best answer "502 Bad Gateway" error on my profile activity page

I just noticed this morning that on my hosted site, I get a 502 error when I visit the activity page for my profile:

http://expats.qa/users/1/todofixthis/?sort=recent

It seems to be just my account; if I go to another user's profile, it works just fine.

2015-10-05 10:58:38 -0500 marked best answer "502 Bad Gateway" when visiting certain URLs, Part 3

Googlebot found another bad URL:

http://expats.qa/get-editor/

When viewing it on my hosted site, I get an Nginx 502 Bad Gateway error.

2015-10-05 10:58:37 -0500 marked best answer Search field should do an "AND" search, not an "OR" search

I've been wondering for the longest time why I can't ever seem to find what I'm looking for when I search for questions on askbot.org. I think I finally figured it out.

I was doing a search for "feedback captcha" to see if anyone else has posted a feature request to add a captcha to the feedback form for anonymous users.

As expected, the search results were hit-and-miss. Some were on target, most were completely unrelated. But then I noticed something: none of the posts in the search results contained both "feedback" and "captcha"; each search hit referenced only one of the search terms.

I ran a quick experiment to test my hypothesis:

  • "feedback captcha" - 51 results
  • "feedback" - 46 results
  • "captcha" - 6 results

This is counter-intuitive behavior for search. Adding more words to a search query makes it more specific, so it should result in fewer search results.

Using the above example, Suggestions for antispam measures? was the only question that matched both search terms — that should have been the only result when I searched for "feeback captcha".

2015-10-05 10:58:37 -0500 marked best answer Unable to edit my answer to make it community wiki

I went to edit an answer that I had created to mark it as community wiki, but I noticed that the answer will not convert to CW, no matter how many times I edit it.

This only seems to apply when I edit a post; if I check the community wiki checkbox when I create the post. it becomes CW as expected.

This only seems to apply to answers, as I was able to edit this question and make it CW.

2015-10-05 10:58:37 -0500 marked best answer Incorrect disclosure triangle states in post revision history

Looking at the revision history for a post, it seems like the disclosure triangle states are backwards:

Expanded

Expanded revision history, but disclosure triangle control shows collapsed state.

Collapsed

Collapsed revision history, but disclosure triangle shows expanded state.

Usually, the disclosure triangle is pointed sideways when the content is collapsed, and pointed down when the content is expanded.

Example from Mac OS X Human Interface Guidelines (emphasis mine):

Appearance and Behavior

A disclosure triangle is in the closed position (that is, pointing to the right) by default. When the user clicks a disclosure triangle, it points down and the additional information is displayed.

2015-10-05 10:58:37 -0500 marked best answer Incorrect reputation check when attempting to reopen a closed question?

So just now I came across this question, which appears to be a duplicate of this question.

I saw that I had the ability to close the question, so I did so, marking it as a duplicate.

When I noticed that I was unable to indicate which post the question is a duplicate of, I tried to re-open the question.

However, even though I have well over the required 50 karma, I was unable to reopen the question:

Banner indicating that my account does not have sufficient privileges to reopen the question

Either I'm not reading the error message correctly (the > 50 karma requirement only applies to the post owner), or the karma check for reopening a question is not being done correctly.

Also, shouldn't the error message say "karma" instead of "reputation"?

2015-10-05 10:58:37 -0500 marked best answer Editing a question title does not change SEO URL if I only append text to the title

I posted a question on my hosted site a couple of weeks ago, initially entitled New Requirements for Panama Permanent Residency.

To improve SEO a bit, I added some keywords to the title and renamed it to "New Requirements for Panama Permanent Residency under Executive Decree 343".

However, I notice that the SEO URL did not get updated:

http://expats.askbot.com/question/69/new-requirements-for-panama-permanent-residency/

The updated title should be:

http://expats.askbot.com/question/69/new-requirements-for-panama-permanent-residency-under-executive-decree-343/

EDIT: I did some test edits on this question to try to nail down the behavior. It looks like if I edit the text in the title, the SEO URL is updated, but if I only append text to the title, the SEO URL is unaffected.

2015-10-05 10:58:37 -0500 marked best answer Tags that are too long to display use truncated version when retagging question.

On my hosted site, I have an extra-long tag: residency-and-citizenship.

When Askbot displays the tag, it truncates the text:

Screenshot of tags for question with "residency-and-citizenship" tag displaying as "residency-and-citize..."

I'm not really wild about that, but I can live with it.

However, weird things happen when I try to retag a question:

Retag dialog with truncated tag text in input field instead of full tag

Even weirder things happen if I save the tags for that question unmodified and try to retag another one:

Another retag dialog with autocomplete showing both the truncated and full versions of the "residency-and-citizenship" tag

It seems that somewhere in there, Askbot saved the truncated version of the tag!

Looking at the tag list for my site seems to confirm this:

Tag list for site with "residency-and-citize..." listed twice!

Interestingly, this problem only seems to occur when retagging a question. If I edit a question, the "Tags" field behaves as expected:

Tags field when editing a question correctly showing "residency-and-citizenship"

2015-10-05 10:58:36 -0500 marked best answer Changelog for 0.7.43

I just noticed that my hosted site was upgraded to v0.7.43, but I can't find a changelog for this version anywhere on askbot.org nor on the Github repo that details what changed (aside from trawling through the commit log, I suppose).

What changed from 0.7.42 to 0.7.43?

2015-10-05 10:58:36 -0500 marked best answer Ability to specify custom flag reason/explanation

Related: Feature Suggestion: More Flags(!)

On other Q&A sites, I sometimes "meta-flag" posts; that is, I will flag a post that might not have anything obviously wrong with it in order to point out questionable activity by the post's author or to indicate that the post might be part of a pattern.

In order to facilitate this, it is necessary for me to be able to specify a custom reason (via free-form text input) why I am flagging a post.

Askbot does not currently have this feature, however.

2015-10-05 10:58:36 -0500 marked best answer Display voting controls for own posts?

Should Askbot hide voting controls when you're looking at your own posts (questions/answers/comments)? Since you can't vote for your own posts, it doesn't seem like there's any benefit to making them visible.

Screenshot of question voting controls with error displayed: "Sorry, you cannot vote for your own posts"

Screenshot of comment voting controls with same error displayed

2015-10-05 10:58:36 -0500 marked best answer Social Sharing fails silently if JSONP request fails

I attempted to share a link to a question on my Askbot hosted site on Facebook. I clicked on the Facebook icon, but nothing happened. I clicked on it a few times, and nothing continued to happen:

Social sharing buttons.

I checked my web inspector, and I noticed that the JSONP request was getting a 503 response:

Screen shot of web inspector indicating that the request to json-tinyurl.appspot.com was returning a 503.

(right-click and select "Open Image in New Tab" to view full-size)

There should probably be some kind of feedback when these requests fail.

2015-10-05 10:58:36 -0500 marked best answer Unparsed token in badge page template

Googlebot reported an odd server error on my hosted Askbot site today:

URL: http://expats.askbot.com/badges/%(feedback_faq_url)s

Error details

Last crawled: 4/19/12
First detected: 4/19/12
Googlebot couldn't access this page because the server didn't understand the syntax of Googlebot's request.

Looking at the badges page on my site, I notice that there appears to be an unprocessed token in the markup of the page:

Link to feedback form on the badges page with unparsed %(feedback_faq_url) token in href attribute.

2015-10-05 10:58:36 -0500 marked best answer Clicking on a tag in a tag cloud goes to the wrong URL.

On my hosted site, I have a tag cloud displaying on the homepage:

Tag cloud on expat site.

This is set via /settings/FORUM_DATA_RULES/:

Setting for "Format of tag list" in admin UI, set to "cloud".

Clicking on a tag in the tag cloud takes me to e.g., http://expats.askbot.com/questions/?tags=singapore, but the list of questions that is displayed is not filtered at all. In fact, the presence of the tags parameter in the URL doesn't seem to have any effect upon the list of questions whatsoever.

If I change the display to a list instead of a cloud, clicking on a tag goes to the correct URL (e.g., http://expats.askbot.com/questions/scope:all/sort:activity-desc/tags:singapore/page:1/).

The same behavior occurs on the Tags page (http://expats.askbot.com/tags/). If the tags are displayed as a tag cloud, the URL for each link is incorrect, but the URL is correct when they are displayed as a list.

2015-10-05 10:58:36 -0500 marked best answer "502 Bad Gateway" when visiting certain URLs

Not sure how to get to this URL, but somehow Googlebot found a way (:

These seem like they are expecting post data and are erroring when I send a get request:

When I access any of these URLs on my hosted Askbot site, I get a "502 Bad Gateway" error.

2015-10-05 10:58:36 -0500 marked best answer HTML escaped incorrectly on Data entry and display rules admin page

On the Data entry and display rules settings page (/settings/FORUM_DATA_RULES/), the HTML for "Enable embedding videos" is escaped so that the HTML tags are visible:

Enable embedding videos. <em>Note: please read <a href="http://askbot.org/doc/optional-modules.html#embedding-video>read this</a> first.</em>

2015-10-05 10:58:35 -0500 marked best answer Sitemap URL is example.com in robots.txt

When I view my site's robots.txt file in my browser, I notice that the Sitemap URL is incorrect:

http://expats.askbot.com/robots.txt:

User-agent: *
Disallow:

Sitemap: http://example.com/sitemap.xml

Note that the URL for the sitemap uses example.com as its domain.

Following the instructions in http://askbot.org/en/question/2715/sitemapxml-is-using-examplecom, I changed the domain for my website, and now http://expats.askbot.com/sitemap.xml is displaying the correct URLs, but robots.txt is still broken.

2015-10-05 10:58:35 -0500 marked best answer Accepting answer results in broken image

When I accept an answer on one of my questions on askbot.org, I get a broken image:

Broken "accepted answer" image

When I refresh the page, the "accepted answer" graphic appears as expected.

Using Chrome on Mac OS. Let me know if you need any additional details.
