Adding announcements, site updates, etc. to the sidebar
 

This should be a good feature for askbot sites - Serves for - Site announcements, NEWS, META and site-maintenance updates.

I've just started working on this feature. I need your inputs and thoughts.

To enter a block of code:

  • enter empty line after your previous text
  • paste or type the code
  • select the code and press the button above

There is already a way to customize sidebar on most pages on the site; look under "Static Content, URLS & UI" in the Askbot settings module (requires administrator login):

For example, I have added a simple box to my Askbot-powered site:

It's not the most user-friendly interface, and this probably is not an ideal situation for e.g., displaying a list of the most recent posts on a blog or meta site (you'd have to remember to manually update the list in the sidebar every time you made a new post).

But it might be a good workaround until a more fleshed-out widget admin interface is implemented.

yes agreed, we need widgets or a standard to generalize. :) May be a separate Django app to handle and manage this? Awaiting others thoughts and opinions in its implementation and behavior. @Evgeny
