For some reason, I am not able to leave comments on the site. I can only reply to questions. Is it related to my Karma level (only 1) or is it something else?

This is a point of some contention on the StackExchange network.
On SE sites, you can always comment on your own questions and answers, even if you have only 1 reputation.
To comment on other posts, you need 50 reputation.
It's a tricky issue to solve. If you make it so that anybody can post a comment, you risk dramatically lowering your signal-to-noise ratio and burdening your mod team with more work. If you make the required amount of reputation too high, though, people will be tempted to post answers that should be comments.
I've read the whole thread on SE.meta. Just an opinion - if the original authors have never the commenting barrier, nobody would ever complain about that issue. On SE.meta only vocal minority seems to support the feature...
On this site you need 10 points to comment anywhere. I'll lower it to 1, probably no point limiting this.
Maybe the bug is that users are not explained why this is the case.
Thanks for your quick response. I would tend to think that if you limit comments, you should also limit the answering capacity. Or the other way round would be: if you allow answers, then probably you should also allow comments. If you need to block one, then answer seems more apropriate to me as it seems a "bigger" contribution than commenting.
One last thing: if you keep blocking comments, you should still leave the comment button visible, so people can click on it and get the "you need a karma of XX to be able to comment on this site" message. Otherwise they have no way to know I think.
I tend to agree with your proposition, still for the large sites there is a use case of limiting comments because they tend to be more often off-topic, but for the tiny sites you'll want to lower the barriers.

Do you still have a lot of work to do on AskBot ? You aim to develop something as good as StackOverflow, or different ? Could you share with me the vision you have for the software ?
